Ugogo na Ardhi yake

🇹🇿  Achevé en 1961, Ugogo na ardhi yake "l'Ugogo et sa terre" est le premier traité complet de géographie rédigé en kiswahili au sujet de la région de l'Ugogo au centre de la Tanzanie continentale. Le livre est aussi pionnier dans le domaine de l'écologie tanzanienne. Il est une source de données chiffrées présentées en tableaux au sujet de la population de l'Ugogo, des cultures vivrières et de l'environnement climatique. On y trouve en particulier des relevés pluviométriques réalisés sur une échelle d'une trentaine d'année. Les termes techniques de la langue cigogo ayant trait à la nature des sols de la région sont définis et présentés en anglais et en kiswahili. Enfin l'organisation administrative de l'époque est fournie dans le détail.

Le manuscrit est resté inédit jusqu'en 2014. Il a été découvert en 2007 par Mathieu Roy en association avec le TUKI (TATAKI à présent de l'Université de Dar es Salaam) qui a localisé les archives de Mathias E. Mnyampala à Dodoma en Tanzanie en retrouvant le second fils de l'auteur, M. Charles M. Mnyampala qui les conservait depuis la disparition de son père en 1969. Le manuscrit a ensuite été édité et publié par Mathieu Roy et Aurélia Ferrari.

The book gives precious details with numeric tables about populations, crops and environment. The linguistic terms about the land and especially the soil are given in a Cigogo/Kiswahili translation. The precise administrative organization of the land is also described. Ugogo na ardhi yake will be a valuable reference book for historians, geographers and all the people interested in the history of geography and ecology in the beginning of the 20th century in Tanganyika. It is worth to mention that Mathias E. Mnyampala is a pioneer in the history of ecology studies in East Africa also he is more known as a poet and lawyer.

This manuscript remained for more than forty years without being printed after the death of the author in 1969. It was discovered in 2007 in Dodoma by Dr. Mathieu Roy in collaboration with TUKI (TATAKI now of the University of Dar es Salaam) and the author's son Mr. Charles M. Mnyampala who kept the manuscript as a collection of unedited papers for a long time and got it edited in 2013 by Dr. Aurélia Ferrari and Dr. Mathieu Roy from INALCO - Alliance Sorbonne Paris Cité, France.
